BENGALURU: Families of seven among the 10 farmers who were killed during the three-decade-old Mahadayi agitation are yet to receive the entire compensation of `5 lakh from the government, Raitha Sena Karnataka members said on Monday.
“Three farmers who were killed during the Mahadayi agitation had received a compensation of `5 lakh announced by then chief minister Siddaramaiah. Families of the remaining seven farmers have received a partial compensation of `2.5 lakh,’’ Sena Karnataka president Veeresh Sobaradmath said. He later submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy who had turned up in person to redress the grievances of Sena members who were staging a dharna near Vidhana Soudha.
Sobaradmath and other activists urged Kumaraswamy to release the remaining compensation to the families at the earliest. Their five demands in the memorandum included the complete waiver of farmer loans, education loan of farmers’ children, announcing minimum support price and opening procurement centres across the state. “The CM promised us that the demands would be realised,’’ a Sena member said.
