The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Tuesday told the Karnataka High Court that it has completed the task of remodelling and construction of 192.35 km of stormwater drains (SWDs) besides completing desilting of 157 km of SWD.
BBMP’s Chief Engineer (SWD), in a progress report submitted to the court, has also said that the civic body is further taking up remodelling, construction and desilting of drains in Yeshwantpura sub-division, and this work would be completed in 60 days.
The report also stated that the BBMP has completed the work of providing chain link fencing along 179.85 km of SWDs in 118 locations to prevent people from throwing garbage into the drain while pointing out that additional 16 vulnerable reaches of SWDs have been identified for fencing.
The report was filed during the hearing of a PIL petition, filed by Citizens Action Group in 2014 seeking various directions for desilting of SWDs and to take steps to prevent entry of sewerage into lakes through the SWDs.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Krishna S Dixit adjourned further hearing to August 1 while asking the BBMP and other authorities, like the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, to work in coordination.
