LONDON: The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has approached a US court to force a California-based website over leaked footage of the hit show "Doctor Who".

The network has gone to the California Federal Court asking the site to produce records which could identify who shared the videos of the next series, BBC reported.

A 53-second clip and two photographs of the new Doctor Jodie Whittaker were leaked on online platform Tapatalk a week ago.

The footage was then extensively shared across social media.

Tapatalk has been subpoenaed and all copies of the footage have been deleted from the online network. Investigations are underway to trace the source of the leak. BBC Studios said in a statement it takes "theft and illegal distribution of our content extremely seriously".

They added that they "will strive to protect our programme-makers, audiences and licence fee payers from any breaches of security - ensuring 'Doctor Who' fans enjoy the final and fully completed version of the episode when it premieres".

Season 11 of the hit BBC show is set to premiere in October.

The new season features Whittaker in the title role, making her the first female Doctor.
