Surat: Surat city experienced its first monsoon rain on Tuesday morning. The city recorded 109mm of rain in eight hours till 8pm. There were a few incidents of electric short- circuit and 14 trees got uprooted in parts of the city. Many parts of University Road, Gaurav Path, Dindoli and Udhna underpass were waterlogged.
Bhedwad and Mithi creeks passing through the city received fresh inflow of water and began to flow near danger mark at some places due to rain in Kamrej and Choryasi. They will start to overflow if another 200mm of rain is received by Kamrej and Choryasi, flood control department officials said. A good spell of rain lashed the whole city in the morning for the first time this season, disrupting normal life. People were compelled to drive their vehicles slow and those on two-wheelers preferred to push rather than ride through the water.

The slow and steady rain did not choke sewerage, a normal thing during downpours. However, large amount of rainwater got collected at Udhna underpass going toward Limbayat and Dindoli. There was water on roads at Udhna and Pandesara too. A few areas in Kapodra and Dabholi got flooded, giving an opportunity to children to make the most of it. A car got stuck on service road of Udhna-Magdalla Road.

Fire department sources said 14 trees got uprooted in the rain. A tree fell on two cars damaging them at New Shakti Society of Varachha. Reports of uprooting of trees were also received from Athwagate, Chowk Bazaar, Piplod, Vastadevdi Road, Bhatar Road, Atal Nagar on AK Road, Bhimpore, New City Light Road, Mora Bhagal, LH Road, Singanpore crossroads, near Maskati Hospital and Ambikanikatan Gate.
