AGRA: Almost two months after a Dalit pre-wedding procession was allegedly attacked by people from an upper-caste community in Rajasthan, a dozen members of Dalit community were allegedly attacked in a similar manner in UP’s Mathura district on Monday night.

The incident took place, when members of Dalit community, who were taking out a pre-wedding procession, did not allow the vehicle of one Digambar Singh (20) to pass due to the “narrow” road.

According to police, the incident took place at Farah’s Salempur village, around 25km south of Mathura district around 10:30 last night. Police said that the incident took a violent turn after Digambar was thrashed by the members of the Dalit community.

In retaliation Digambar called his family members, who came, armed with sticks and beat the Dalits including the bride’s father Ramswaroop, nephew Omveer, and the groom’s brother Brijesh.

They all were admitted at the Community Health Centre (CHC) Farah for treatment. However, the wedding rituals were successfully completed late night in the presence of the police.

Station House Officer (SHO) of Farah police station Aazad Pal Singh said, a case under various sections of IPC including 147 and 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) along with sections of 7/8 POCSO (Protection of Children from sexual Offences) Act and SC/ST Act has been registered against 10-15 people.

Talking to media persons, the groom’s father, Nem Singh alleged that members of the upper-caste community also misbehaved with their women who were in the procession. “Some vehicles, which were parked near the wedding venue, were also damaged by them, “alleged Nem Singh.
