Faculty members say it is affecting enrolment of students for PG courses

MADURAI

With the enrolment for postgraduate courses in many departments of Madurai Kamaraj University already witnessing dwindling numbers, some faculty members have alleged that the inordinate delay in publication of results for undergraduate courses in affiliated colleges has worsened the situation this year.

As classes have commenced a little early for PG courses at MKU this year, the faculty members say that a number of departments have less than five students enrolled till now. “Usually, departments like School of Religion, Philosophy and Humanist Thought, School of Social Sciences and School of Indian Languages have less number of students. This time, the situation is worse,” said a senior Professor.

According to the faculty members, while PG courses usually commenced on the first working day of July, this time the university decided to advance it to June 25. But the university did not release results for UG courses in affiliated colleges before that day, they said.

Pointing out that the a majority of enrolment in MKU came from students in affiliated colleges, the head of a department in School of English and Foreign Language Studies said that students were uncertain now about enrolling for PG courses. “Only if they know whether they have cleared all the papers in the final semester, can they decide about PG,” he said, adding that the UG results were usually published in June.

A faculty member from a department in School of Economics said that while a number of students came for enquiries, they did not turn up for enrolment. “We are hopeful that the numbers will increase since we are allowed to admit students till the end of August,” he said. Meanwhile, some faculty members alleged that they were asked by the administration to increase the enrolment or stop offering a course if the number of students was less than five.

Acknowledging the delay in publication of results, a senior official from the administration said that it was partially due to the reintroduction of dummy-numbering system in the evaluation process this year.

Stating that efforts were on full swing, O. Ravi, Controller of Examinations, said that he was hopeful of publishing the results in ten days. He pointed out that the results were published last year only on July 12.
