HYDERABAD: The Law Commission of India convened a meeting with political parties on July 7 and July 8 to elicit the views of various parties on conducting simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.
Law Commission of India chairman BS Chauhan wrote letters to the heads of all the recognised political parties recently. The consultations will be held on July 7 or July 8, in the conference room, Law Commission of India in Delhi.
“Participate in the interaction and share your valuable thoughts and suggestions, which could enable us in weighing the pros and cons of the subject. In the event your are not able to attend, nominate a representative of your party who can place the view before the Commission,” the Commission chairman said. “The Commission is of the view that any major law reform must be undertaken after taking the stakeholders and the general public into confidence.
The Commission appreciates that the impact of holding simultaneous elections directly bears upon the public of the country and then, political parties.
In its letter, the Commission stated that holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and Assemblies have been engaging the attention of political parties, government organisations, academia and the intellectuals of the country, in the recent times.
“PM Narendra Modi gave a call to start a constructive discussion on the subject. Taking this call as a mandate, the Commission has decided to undertake this study in this regard,” the Commission chairman said in his communication to the heads of political parties.
