Nagpur: “Lok Adalat aims to settle pending Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and other local government bodies’ matters,” said DP Surana, district judge while addressing the officials at a press conference held today at district court premises.
“Lok Adalat deals with private disputes, insurance and financial claims, traffic violations and you should make the most of it. Recovery of the taxes will be looked upon seriously, but for that we need to summon the people who haven’t paid taxes, we have to bring them under the light,” Surana added.

Presided over by DY Kale, secretary, District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) and in the presence of district and additional sessions judges Surana, SS Das, SASM Ali, the conference focused on enlightening the local bodies and the corporations to work on their list of defaulters and send notices to as many as they can.

NMC informed that they are having more than one lakh defaulters out of which they sent notices to the ones they have to recover the most from. “Looking into this case, we would like to advise you to send more notices and if possible we will conduct an individual ‘Lok Adalat’ just for NMC,” Surana added.

Officials from different gram panchayats discussed about their house and water tax defaulters, number of pending cases and amount to be recovered. They were advised by the judges on how to work on it.

Post the conference Kale spoke on ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme’ while Surekha Borkute, member, DLSA spoke on juvenile justice (Care and Protection of Children Act) and Rishikesh Dhale, panel lawyer of DLSA, threw light on Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POSCO).

Conducted by DLSA with the aid of National Authority and Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority ‘Lok Adalat’ is meant for pre litigative claims/cases under the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987 and to dispose of pending cases and pre-litigation disputes.o
