Sirsi, Bengal science teachers awarded

BENGALURU: The CNR Rao Education Foundation on Monday presented the Outstanding Science Teachers Award for 2017, to two teachers from rural India who inspired students to take up science.
SK Samsul Alam from Basantapur High School in Silut, West Bengal and Krishnamurthy L Bhat from Government High School in Sirsi received the award.

"We believe that good science teachers need to be identified and made role models for others. While we always identify one teacher from Karnataka, the award also picks people from across the country, especially from rural India," Indumati Rao told TOI.

Both Alam and Bhat have been recipients of other awards and were chosen for their continuous efforts in improving science teaching.

While Alam has developed various innovative teaching strategies to help teachers, Bhat has motivated and guided students in several successful projects.

"Mathematics, for instance, has to be presented to the learners in a way that they are able to understand it through their natural reasoning. Sadly, that is not happening in the present system and the situation is similar when it comes to physical sciences as well," Alam said.

Bhat, while acknowledging the role his teachers played, said he hoped to emulate them and get as many students as possible to take up the sciences.
