While on a worldwide scale, international tourist arrivals grew 6 percent between January and April, the Americas saw only 3 percent growth during that time. Asia and the Pacific saw the most growth at 8 percent and Europe saw 7 percent growth. In the Americas, North America saw 4.1 percent growth in the first four months of this year, while South America led the region with 7.7 percent growth.
Africa saw 5.6 percent growth, as did the Middle East at 4.5 percent. The Caribbean saw a 9 percent decrease in international tourism.
The UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said, “International tourism continues to show significant growth worldwide, and this translates into job creation in many economies. This growth reminds us of the need to increase our capacity to develop and manage tourism in a sustainable way, building smart destinations and making the most of technology and innovation.”
UNWTO’s Panel of Tourism Experts survey found that most experts were optimistic about global tourism.
