Elderly couple commits suicide, blames son in note to police

DIBRUGARH: Police on Monday found five suicide notes written by a couple who killed themselves at Sivasagar town on Sunday.
Rajani Khargharia (62), who used to run a mobile theatre company, was found hanging by the neck and his wife Ruby (58) was found dead on her bed. Rajani also once oḤwned the famous Kalanchupar Hotel located at Central Market in Sivasagar town. "The couple had left behind five suicide notes - addressed separately to their younger daughter, landlord, police, a newspaper and a satellite news channel," SP (Sivasagar) Subodh Sonowal said on Monday. "In the note, the couple mentioned they were facing acute financial problems and their only son had stopped looking after them. They had been unable to buy medicines or pay the rent for quite some time. When they approached their son for help, they wrote, he ridiculed them," the SP added.

Speaking to the media, the couple's daughters said their father had been forced to sell off all his valuables to secure a job for his son. After he got the job, they added, he cut off all ties with his parents. According to reports, his son and daughter-in-law have been absconding since the incident. Apart from the son the couple is survived by three married daughters. In the note addressed to police, the couple appealed for strict action and exemplary punishment against their son and daughter-in-law.
