Man climbs from car wreckage and flees after crash

A driver has climbed from the wreckage of his overturned vehicle and fled following a crash in Melbourne's east that left a woman with serious injuries.

The hit and run occurred on Mount Dandenong Road near Donald Street in Croydon at 9.45pm on Monday night.

The driver of the Toyota Yaris involved is still on the run.

The vehicle skidded across the road and over the centre median strip, before colliding with another car, police said.

The first car rolled onto its roof.

Following the crash, the driver of the Yaris climbed out of his overturned vehicle and ran from the scene.

A 64-year-old Croydon Hills woman, who was driving the other car, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said she was initially trapped in her vehicle before she was freed by paramedics.

She was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life threatening injuries to her face, knee and chest.

Police said they are investigating if speed was a contributing factor in the crash.
