GURUGRAM: Three taxi drivers were arrested in New Palam Vihar on Sunday for allegedly harassing and sexually assaulting a
social activist near a farm house in Sector 5.
The accused —Shubham, Sumit and Abhishek— have been charged under sections 354-A (sexual assault), 509 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC. An FIR has been registered in this regard at Sector 5 police station and the trio will be produced in court on Monday.
According to the complainant, the incident happened around 10pm on Saturday outside Neki Farm House, where the woman along with her husband and brother had gone to attend a wedding ceremony.
“I had come out of the party venue and was waiting for my brother and husband inside my car that was parked by the roadside. After sometime a
Swift Dzire came from behind and stopped near my car. I saw around four to five men seated in the car consuming alcohol. After a while, they started showing obscene gestures to me and calling me names. In the meantime, my husband came out of the farmhouse and noticed the men harassing me. As he raised an alarm, the accused fled in their car,” the social activist told police.
With the help of the car’s registration number, cops identified its owner to be one Sumit, who while interrogation revealed that he was inside the car when the crime took place. Apparently, Sumit got engaged a week ago and they were returning from a party organised to celebrate his engagement. He further told cops that his friends — Shubham and Abhishek — were there with him in the car. The trio was arrested from their residence in New Palam Vihar.
“All three are taxi drivers. We are investigating if there were more people with them in the car during the incident,” said sub inspector Sakender Singh, the investigating officer.
