NEW DELHI: Equity markets erased some of the losses it incurred in mid-day trade but
Sensex and
Nifty still closed with losses of half a per cent each.
30-share BSE Sensex lost 159.07 points to close at 35,264.41 while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty shed 57 points to finish just above 10,650-mark.
In mid-day trade, Sensex had lost as much as 280 points on back of weak Asian cues as major bourses in China and Japan faced losses.
IT stocks aided the Street to recover some ground as
Infosys gained more than 2 per cent. All other sectoral sub-indices finished in the red with the Nifty Metal sub-index losing the most at 1.8 per cent.
Asian Paints,
Bajaj Auto and
ICICI Bank were some of the other scrips which performed well on an otherwise choppy day of trading.
