Tesla engineering chief leaving company permanently

Tesla Inc.'s top engineer, Doug Field, is leaving the company after it managed to hit delayed production targets while he was on leave, according to a Monday afternoon report. The Wall Street Journal reported that Field was leaving permanently about 20 minutes before U.S. markets closed Monday afternoon, after the stock suffered an up-and-down day in the wake of Tesla announcing that it produced 5,000 Model 3 cars in a week for the first time. Tesla confirmed the move in a statement to WSJ, saying "After almost five years at Tesla, Doug Field is moving on. We'd like to thank Doug for his hard work over the years and for everything he has done for Tesla." Field, the senior vice president for engineering, had taken a leave of absence in early May. Tesla shares closed with a 2.3% decline at $335.07, while the S&P 500 index closed with a 0.3% gain.

Tesla stock downgraded to sell from hold at CFRA

CFRA analysts downgraded Tesla Inc. stock to sell from hold Monday, and said it does not expect the company's production rate of 5,000 Model 3 mass-market sedans a week is sustainable. Tesla shares were higher, after the electric car maker said it met its deadline of achieving 5,000 Model 3s, albeit a few hours after the original midnight deadline. The company said it is now shooting for 6,000 Model 3s a week by the end of August and reiterated its guidance that it will profitable and cash flow positive in the third and fourth quarters. But CFRA analyst Efraim Levy said the it does not view the production rate as "operationally or financially sustainable," although he conceded that it could become so over time. "As usual, we expect the bulls and bears to largely reiterate their views after the latest development," he wrote in a note. Separately, he said reports that Tesla is asking for another $2,500 non-refundable deposit from Model 3 reservation holders "as a little unnerving, as it seems to be an aggressive attempt to meet otherwise difficult targets of being cash flow positive in Q3.," he wrote. Tesla shares are now trading well above Levy's 12-month target price of $300, he said. "Our view is now sell." Tesla shares have gained 11.5% in 2018, while the S&P 500 has gained 1.4%.

Tesla confirms 5,000 Model 3s produced in a week, shoots for 6,000 a week by late August

Tesla Inc.'s stock ran up 5.8% in premarket trade Monday, after the electric car maker confirmed reports that it reached its target of producing 5,000 Model 3 vehicles in a week, and said it expects to boost production to 6,000 per week by late next month. Tesla said it produced 5,031 Model 3 vehicles in the last seven days of the second quarter, as well as 1,913 Model S and Model X vehicles. The company said it produced a total of 55,339 vehicles during the second quarter, up 55% from the first quarter. In total, the company produced 28,578 Model 3 vehicles during the quarter, compared with the combined production of 24,761 Model S and Model X vehicles. Tesla also affirmed its guidance for positive net income and cash flow in the third and fourth quarters, despite the headwinds of a weaker U.S. dollar and likely higher tariffs imported into China. Tesla shares have rallied 10% year to date through Friday, while the S&P 500 has gained 1.7%.

Tesla's stock surges; Edmunds says real test is maintaining production pace

Shares of Tesla Inc. ran up 6% in premarket trade Monday, after reports that the electric car maker hit its production target of 5,000 Model 3 sedans in a week. Jeremy Acevedo, manager of industry analysis at automotive information and research company Edmunds, said hitting that milestone is a "win" for Tesla, but the real accomplishment will be if the company can keep up that pace. "Erecting a tent and cramming in extra shifts aren't necessarily the signs of a company on a sustainable path, but Tesla has proved at least in the near term that the company is serious about quieting the naysayers and at least trying to keep its promise," Acevedo wrote in a note to clients. Tesla's stock has soared 36% over the past three months through Friday, but have lost 5.2% over the past 12 months, while the S&P 500 has gained 12% the past year.

Tesla shares shorted fell in June but not because of a short squeeze, says analyst

The number of Tesla Inc. shares shorted fell by 4.2 million shares in June, but that wasn't because of a short squeeze, according to Ihor Dusaniwsky of financial technology and analytics firm S3 Partners. He wrote Friday that 60% of the decrease in shares shorted "occurred when Tesla's stock price fell 7% after hitting its year-to-date high in mid-June," meaning it was "definitely not the result of any type of 'short-squeeze.'" Tesla's stock fell 2% in Friday trading, but Dusaniwsky said it was the result of "long sellers pushing the stock price down," given that there was only a slight increase in the number of shares shorted, according to his analysis. "Tesla's hitting or missing its 5,000 car/week end of June production rate target will generate significant mark-to-market profits and losses for long and short shareholders," he wrote. Tesla's stock is down 5% over the past 12 months, while the S&P 500 has gained 12%.

Baird remains bullish on Tesla ahead of Q2 deliveries expected by next Tuesday

Tesla Inc. will likely release its second-quarter delivery numbers by Tuesday, July 3, Baird analysts said Thursday, and they are buyers into the release. Baird rates Tesla stock outperform and has designated it a fresh pick, meaning it deems the stock a high-conviction investment based on fundamental or quantitative factors until a specified expiration date. "The primary focus will likely be on exit rate Model 3 production, and we believe shares could trade higher if the company approaches its targets," analysts led by Ben Kallo wrote in a note. "Additionally, we believe investors will look for total Model 3s produced in June (if the company releases June data) in an effort to gauge steady-state production rates." Baird is expecting deliveries of about 25,000 vehicles with more in the channel, although the focus will be more on production than delivery. The FactSet consensus is for 28,000 Model 3 deliveries, out of 51,000 vehicles in total. "Consensus estimates for Q2 deliveries may be too high, particularly given our belief there could be a larger-than-normal delta between production and deliveries due to the ramp during the quarter," said Kallo. "That said, Elon Musk's recent email could indicate the company is tracking ahead of consensus expectations." Tesla shares were up 3.2% on Thursday, and have gained 14% in 2018, while the S&P 500 has gained 1.2%.
