LUDHIANA: The customs commissionerate here celebrated first GST Day at its office on GT Road, Sahnewal, on Sunday.
Nearly 100 workers of the commissionerate participated in the celebrations.

The celebrations began with a plantation drive. The commissioner of customs, A S Ranga, described GST as the biggest tax reform since Independence. “The goods and service tax (GST) was implemted by PM Narendra Modi on July 1. The introduction of GST is truly a game-changer for Indian economy; it has replaced a multi-layered, complex indirect-tax structure with a simple, transparent and technology-driven regime,” he said. “GST has subsumed over a dozen local taxes and transformed India into a 'one nation, one tax’ country.”

He said GST would have a multiplier effect on the economy, with benefits accruing for various sectors such as exports, small trade, agriculture and industry. “GST promotes 'Make In India' and has improved ease of doing business,” he said.

GST Day concluded with the screening of a short film produced by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
