Minister says 71% of the country’s population have got their own toilets

The Union Government’s promise to provide home for all the homeless in the country will be realised by 2022, Union Minister of State for Tourism K.J. Alphons has said.

The Minister was launching the Pradhan Mantri Surksha Beema Yojana free insurance scheme in Kulanada grama panchayat near Pandalam on Monday.

Four years ago

Addressing the function, the Minister said 67% of the Indian population did not have toilets when the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) came to power four years ago. And, now, with the Government completing its four years, 71% of the country’s population have got their own toilets.

This could be regarded as one of the greatest revolutions the world had witnessed, he claimed.

Mr. Alphons honoured the Chakyarkoothu-Koodiyattom artiste P.A. Narayanan Nair on the occasion. The Union Minister also visited the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) attached to the Christian Agency for Rural Development (CARD) at Thelliyur near Thiruvalla.

Mr. Alphons said that the steps should be taken to introduce native techniques to develop value-added products of jackfruit and in apiculture.

Interactions

The Union Minister also interacted with the employees at KVK, people’s representatives and farmers assembled there, later.

Fr. K.G. Joseph, Mar Thoma Church trustee, presided over the meeting.

Annapoornadevi, district panchayat president; Nirmala Mathews, block panchayat president; P.B. Noohu, District Collector; V.R. Muraleedharan, Coconut Development Board member; C.P. Robert, KVK head; D.V.S. Reddy, principal scientist attached to ICAR in Bangalore, also spoke.
