LUCKNOW: A man suspected to be involved in multiple incidents of
chain snatching opened fire at a police team on being intercepted near Patrakarpuram crossing late on Saturday night. Police have lodged a case of attempt to murder and under Arms Act against the unidentified suspect who fled.
Sub-inspector
Vinod Yadav said the suspect had been spotted in
CCTV footage of two chain snatching incidents last month and was seen twice loitering in the locality on Thursday and Friday. Sub-inspector Vinod Yadav and two constables deployed at Patrakarpuram spotted the suspect riding a black motorcycle without registration number around 12:45am. Wearing a helmet, the suspect didn’t stop when signalled.
He turned towards Vinay Khand as cops followed him.SI Yadav intercepted him near Vinay Khand-3 crossing. The constables following him asked him to take off his helmet and show papers.
“He did not follow instructions and so constables tried to take off his helmet. The suspect whipped out a country-made pistol tucked in his waist and fired in the air. Since it was a residential area, cops could not fire back and he fled,” ASP (Gomtinagar) Chakresh Mishra said.
Yadav and the constables tried to follow him but he vanished.
“We have constituted small teams to conduct checking at vital points. The aim is to keep a vigil on miscreants named in loot, dacoity, thefts in Gomtinagar, Vibhutikhand and Chinhat. The teams are usually clad in civvies when they undertake checking drives while some cops wearing ‘khaki’ are also deployed. We have registered an FIR and started the probe. “we would take out a CCTV grab and show to snatchers arrested in the past,” Mishra said.
