BHOPAL/JHANSI: Two indebted farmers from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh committed suicide on Monday.

Brij Mohan Patel, upset over being unable to pay his kids’ school fees, allegedly committed suicide in Hoshangabad’s Gadaghat village. This is the fourth farmer suicide in MP in a week.

His kin said he was Rs 14 lakh in debt and awaiting payment for pulses he had sold at MSP the previous season. Patel had allegedly consumed poison on Sunday night and was rushed to a hospital where he died the next morning.

“He was under tremendous stress and got more depressed when he couldn’t pay his kids’ school fees,” Patel’s elder brother Ashok said.

In UP, 52-year-old Bardani Prajapati allegedly committed suicide due to poor yield and inability to repay loans in Mahoba district. His body was found hanging from a tree at Khanna village on Monday morning, the police said. His son Laxmi told police his father had left home on Sunday evening to stay at the farm.

“Prajapati had taken a loan of Rs 74,000 from a nationalised bank and Rs 1.25 lakh from private money-lenders for his son Laxmi’s marriage,” a police officer said. “He was under depression as he was unable to repay the loans due to poor yield.”
