Delhi man in police net for Rs 5 crore extortion bid

CHANDIGARH: The cyber cell of the UT police has arrested a Delhi resident for allegedly trying to extort Rs 5 crore from a woman resident of Sector 19.
The accused, Manish Linghwal, 25, who hails from Uttarakhand, had been blackmailing the woman and threatening to upload her obscene videos and pictures on social media.

Jasminder Singh, in-charge, cyber cell, said Linghwal was arrested from Dwarka on Saturday night. Police brought him to the city on Sunday and obtained his police remand for two days from a local court. Police said they have recovered a mobile phone and laptop from the accused. Police have also found some obscene pictures and videos of complainant from his mobile phone. Police said they would try to recover all the pictures and videos of the woman. Police said the accused worked with a private airlines at the Delhi airport.

According to police, Linghwal met the NRI woman on Facebook. The woman at that time was under mental stress as her relationship with her husband was not cordial. The two were planning to part ways. The accused took advantage of her condition, meeting her regularly and becoming her confidant, the woman alleged. The accused then started harassing her.

The complainant alleged the accused stalked her through Facebook by using multiple fake IDs. She said the accused accessed her photographs from her Facebook account and her friend's account. "He started blackmailing her, saying he has photos and videos of her that he had taken while they used to video chat. Later, he forwarded the photos to her family members and friends. He also took her phone and hacked her Facebook account and posted obscene photos from her account," the complaint alleged

The woman alleged the accused started demanding money from her as he was unemployed. He also thrashed her badly when she told him that she wanted to go to meet her family in Chandigarh. Somehow, she managed to reach the city. The accused threatened to "expose her on Internet" and demanded Rs 5 crore.
