In a major administrative reshuffle, the Maharashtra Government on Saturday appointed senior IPS officer Subodh Kumar Jaiswal as Mumbai’s new Police Commissioner.

Jaiswal succeeds Dattatreya Padsalgikar, who took over as Maharashtra’s Director General of Police (DGP).  Padsalgikar replaces Satish Mathur, who retired from his service on Saturday.

A 1985-batch of the IPS officer, Jaiswal comes to Mumbai from New Delhi where he earlier held a senior position with the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW).

Jaiswal was one of the officers who had played a key role into the investigations into the 2003 Telgi stamp paper scam. Thereafter, he also had a stint with the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Maharashtra. He also investigated the serial blasts on Mumbai suburban locals in 2006.

For the post of Mumbai police chief, there were in all three contenders - Sanjay Barve, the Commissioner of State Intelligence Department (SID), Parambir Singh and Rashmi Shukla, the police chiefs of Thane City and Pune City respectively.

Meanwhile, informed sources said that the state government was considering giving an extension to   Padsalgikar, a 1982 batch officer who is due to retire on August 31.
