AHMEDABAD: All four members of a family including two kids ended their lives by jumping into Narmada canal near Jamiyatpura village in Gandhinagar on Sunday as the head of their family — a 35-year-old man — was suffering from a lungs related disease.

Police identified the victims as Vishnu Thakor (35), his wife Sangita Thakor (31) and their kids — Janak (11) and Jahannvi (9) from Lapkaman village in Gandhnagar.

The incident came to light on Sunday morning when a security guard deployed at Narmada canal in Gandhinagar saw the dead bodies floating in the water. He immediately informed the police which found that Solanki and his family members had taken the drastic step due to his prolonged illness.

Adalaj police station sub-inspector Shefali Bulan said that Thakor, a rickshaw-driver, was suffering from some lungs related disease and it was so painful that he had to continuously split blood after coughing.

“As he lost hope to get well, he told his wife on Saturday that he had decided to end his life. His wife said she, too, would commit suicide with him as there was no meaning of life after him,” said Bulan, citing Vishnu Thakor’s suicide note. Then the couple thought of their kids’ bleak future and decided to end their lives as well. The family had told their neighbours that they were going to Civil hospital in Asarwa area in Ahmedabad, but instead, they reached Narmada canal on late Saturday evening and jumped into it in wee hours on Sunday.

The couple first threw the kids in the canal and then they jumped after them.
