HYDERABAD: Rahmath Nagar in Borabanda has been one of the most affected areas when it comes to seismic activity in the city. Yet, high-tension power wires pass through a majority of colonies and are not shifted despite repeated requests from the residents. The residents, for years together, have been living with the fear that the thick electricity cables mounted on huge pillars would fall in case of a seismic activity (as it has happened recently) or a heavy thunderstorm besides being a cause of traffic snarls. Areas like Karmik Nagar, Habeeb Fathima Nagar and a part of Sri Ram Nagar have this issue.

Kamalapally Jayender, a resident of Karmik Nagar whose house is situated in front of a 30-ft-high high-tension power tower, said that the iron structures, sometimes when touched, give a shock. “Children at our home were shocked to have electricity pass through the iron frame. But, soon we realised the gravity and never tried going near it,” he said. “Sometimes, birds make nests on the wires. The twigs which birds keep on the wire to build nests may catch fire and fall on us.”  When contacted, Rahamath Nagar corporators Md Abdul Shafi said there was a proposal to relay the cable underground. “However, due to the heavy cost, the plan has been shelved,” he said.
