The Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said that a review on the recommendation of Lyngdoh committee report on student union elections is required to cater to the changing needs of the time while addressing a State level convention of office bearers of different student unions of Uttarakhand at Doon University on Saturday.

The convention was held under the aegis of higher education department and it was focused on  the need to review the recommendations of Lyngdoh committee.

Terming the initiative as constructive, CM said that the recommendations of Lyngdoh committee had come up in 2008. Things have changed since, warranting a relook, he added. Emphasising that a strong will is needed to bring about positive changes, he said that State Government is giving special attention to bringing about qualitative changes in the higher education realm of the State. Rawat said that to encourage research in higher education, 100 brilliant but economically poor students are being helped in their research. “Similarly, 100 economically weak students would be provided with free coaching for civil services entrance examinations under 'Super 100 scheme,” he said.

Terming the student union elections as the first democratic step towards entering politics for the youth, he said that politicians, students and academicians should work in a coordinated manner for the interest of the country and the state.

Discussions on many points of the Lyngdoh committee recommendation were held among the office bearers of the students’ unions during the convention. Unanimity evolved among the student leaders on the imperative to incorporate changes in the recommendations.

The students were happy over the State Government having set up a three- member committee to review the committee report.

CM also released the first E-service book in higher education department on the occasion.
