PATNA: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked the principals to take action against their school teachers who committed mistakes in evaluating answer copies of Class XII, CBSE public relations officer (PRO) Rama Sharma told this newspaper over the phone from Delhi on Friday.

“Carelessness on the part of teachers has caused problems to a number of students. Such errors will leave bad impression on people about the board,” Rama said, adding the board has asked the regional offices to write a letter to school principals asking them to take action against erring teachers.

“So far, we have found 130 teachers and exam coordinators for making mistakes in totalling of marks awarded in answer copies. Their names will figure in this connection after a detailed report is prepared by the board,” the PRO said.

CBSE sources said out of the 130 teachers, 45 were from Patna region (Bihar and Jharkhand), 27 from Dehradun, 11 from Allahabad, eight each from Ajmer and Panchkula, seven in Bhubaneswar, six in Delhi, four in Chennai, two in Guwahati and one in Thiruvananthapuram, among others.

After re-evaluation of answer copies, several students who had earlier got less marks scored 50.

A senior teacher of one of the CBSE-affiliated schools in Patna said such mistakes were caused as two teachers corrected one answer copy this year. “Half of the answer sheet was corrected by one evaluator, while the other half of the copy was corrected by another evaluator. In such cases, teachers have mistakenly missed a few answer copies and, hence, students got less marks as the initial questions contain one, two or three marks,” he said and added: “It was shocking that how such errors were not corrected as the evaluated copies were even verified by the coordinator of evaluation centres.”

Another teacher said the initiative taken by the board to minimize errors in copy correction failed. “When two teachers correct one copy, there are more chances of mistakes, which happened,” he said.

CBSE Class XII examination was held in March and April and the results were declared on May 26.
