HYDERABAD: Two Delhi-based software engineers, who allegedly duped an MBBS graduate on the pretext of providing MD seat in a reputed medical college by collecting Rs 81 lakh, was arrested by the Hyderabad Cyber Crime police here on Thursday.

The suspects were identified as Santhosh Rai (43) and Manoj Kumar Pathak alias Singh. Police said the duo along with their absconding associates Sunil Kumar and Amit Kumar, both software employees, formed into a gang and plotted to cheat people. They sent bulk messages to phones promising admission in universities.

“When anyone responded to those messages, they ask them to take a DD in the name of Directorate General of Health Service.  They send a forged e-mail purported from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as confirming the seat in central pool quota,” said Anjani Kumar.  The scam came to light when one Fatima Razvi approached the Cybercrime police and complained that she had contacted for a medical seat for her daughter.

Fatima Razvi received a message on her mobile promising admission in universities.  When she contacted them, they responded stating that they would arrange a seat in medical colleges in Karnataka under Central pool quota. Anjani Kumar said she was asked to pay Rs10 lakh as the first instalment.

Subsequently, they collected Rs 81 lakh from her and sent a mail stating she has been allotted MD  (dermatology) seat at Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences in Bellary. After receiving the amount, they would switch off their phones.
