MADURAI
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) leader T. Velmurugan in a case booked against him and his party cadre for allegedly setting ablaze a liquor-laden lorry in Dindigul.
Justice G.R. Swaminathan granted the anticipatory bail after the court took notice of the fact that Mr. Velmurugan, at the time of the incident, was in judicial custody in connection with a case pertaining to the attack on a toll plaza near Ulundurpet in Villupuram district.
In his petition, Mr. Velmurugan said that police had booked him under Sections 147 (Punishment for rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 307 (Attempt to murder) and 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act.
He said he was in no way connected with the incident as he was in judicial custody when the incident happened. Mr. Velmurugan was recently granted bail by the Madras High Court in the toll plaza attack case.
The TVK cadre vandalised a toll plaza near Ulundurpet when they were staging a protest against the delay in constituting the Cauvery Management Board.
