Talking of Emergency

more-in

While the Emergency era is a contentious subject, I remember the common man seeing a few benefits then (“Cong. has not changed since Emergency: PM”, June 27). Trains arrived on time. Punctuality was maintained in offices. Productivity did not get disrupted. There was fear and discipline. There was more importance given to responsibilities than rights. The war of words today between the two national parties over the Emergency is futile. The BJP is wrong in assuming that this issue can be used to attack the Congress. Having said this, it is not true that the BJP has dictatorial tendencies, as the Congress claims.

The BJP won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections by putting down the Congress and promising “acche din”. I am happy that we have a stable government at the Centre. However, in preparation for the 2019 general elections, the BJP is resorting to the same tactics and trying to rake up the past instead of highlighting its achievements. Have its recent defeats in by-elections shaken the party’s confidence?

Arun Jaitley’s comparison of Indira Gandhi to Adolf Hitler is erroneous. She did turn democracy into a dictatorship, but equating her with Hitler, a demagogue who exterminated minorities, is idiotic. In fact, the person who shares similarities with her is Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
