Ideas and suggestions to prevent ATM phishing were exchanged among the police and representatives of various banks at an awareness meeting on ‘the threats posed by skimmer’ organised by Coimbatore City Police on Thursday.
Security officers and those in charge of ATM operations from 40 banks took part in the meeting held at the conference hall of City Police Commissioner’s office.
Speaking at the meeting, Commissioner K. Periaiah urged banks to put in place advanced technologies and surveillance measures to prevent the use of skimmers in ATMs to ensure safe banking.
As appointing security guards in each ATM is impractical, Mr. Periaiah asked whether banks can jointly implement patrolling system in places where ATMs of different banks are situated in a locality.
Representatives of banks shared latest technologies they have adopted to prevent installation of skimmer and burglary attempts at ATMs.
Lead Bank Manager for Coimbatore S. Venkataramanan said that the minutes of the meeting, suggestions and ideas from banks and the police department will be mailed to all the 830 bank branches functioning in Coimbatore district. As per estimation by Lead Bank, there are more than 2,100 ATMs in the district.
