Six more micro compost yards in Tambaram

Fifteen days after it established its first open micro compost yard at Adhi Nagar, East Tambaram, near Selaiyur police station, the Tambaram Municipality has opened six more yards. An open micro compost yard promotes the objectives of decentralised solid waste management, which include easier segregation practices.

Seven more micro compost yards are on the anvil, said Municipal Commissioner, K. Krishnamurthy. Construction work on these yards have already begun and they are expected to become operational in three months. Members of self-help groups will segregate waste and bio-degradable waste will be turned into organic manure.

Residents protest

Meanwhile, residents of Selaiyur organised a demonstration against the construction of a micro compost yard in Ambedkar Nagar burial ground, as they believe it would spoil the environment and water level.

Krishnamurthy pacified the agitators by saying that this method of composting is safe and not harmful to the environment.
