‘Only 10 of the 141 asst. professors appointed were from U.T.’

The Puducherry People’s Rights Forum has urged the Puducherry government to fill the posts of Assistant Professors on contract basis for various disciplines in the Government Arts and Science Colleges by selecting eligible candidates from the Union Territory.

In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and Education Minister R. Kamalakannan, M. Ilango, president of Puducherry People’s Rights Forum, said that although the Puducherry government had framed recruitment rules for the college teachers in May 2012, the appointment for the Group A posts was vested with the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC).

The Pondicherry University was started in 1985 while the government-run Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Postgraduate Studies (KMCPGS) was started in 1989. The Government started one more PG centre in Karaikal in 2017.

Mr. Ilango said the Puducherry government recently filled 141 posts of assistant professors through UPSC. Of them, 10 candidates were from Puducherry while the rest were from North India.

The forum urged the government to ensure that the recruitment of assistant professors should be made only by selecting eligible candidates from the Union Territory. The UPSC should give preference to candidates with Tamil as their mother tongue. This would not only serve the existing rules and regulations but meet the aspirations of unemployed youths from Puducherry.
