CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday released the rank list, based on NEET-2018 scores, for admissions to MBBS and BDS courses in the state.
Health minister C Vijaya Baskar said the state has released two rank lists -- one for applicants to government and self-financing colleges in government quota and the other for management seats in self-financing colleges.

The state received 28,067 applications from students for admission to government colleges. Among them, Keerthana K from Chennai topped the list with 676 marks, followed by Dharmapuri’s Raj Chendur Abishek R who secured 656 marks and Chennai’s Praveen R with 650 marks.

While Keerthana’s score is 20 points higher than that of last year’s topper, Praveen has one point lesser than his counterpart last year.

Dharmapuri’s Raj Chendur Abishek R topped the list of candidates among 19,280 students who had applied seats in the management quota. Although just two girls made it to the top 10 on both the rank lists, there were more than 17,000 girls on the list, compared to nearly 10,000 boys. There was one transgender.

When the counselling for admission begins on July 1, the state will have 3,328 seats – 2,447 seats in state-run medical colleges, 127 seats in Rajah Muthiah Medical College, 65 seats in ESIC in KK Nagar and 689 seats in self-financing colleges under the state quota.

In addition, it will admit students to 516 seats under the management quota.

The number of applicants from other students also went up this year. There were 809 applicants from other states for the government quota seats and 1,960 students for the management quota seats.

“We tightened the rules for claiming nativity this year. Other state students who have studied in Tamil Nadu must prove that they studied here between Class VI and Class XII. Tamil Nadu students who have studied in other states must produce documents including that of their parents to prove nativity. We have also insisted that students who claim they are natives of our state cannot claim nativity in another state,” said health secretary J Radhakrishnan.

Nearly 10% of applicants on both rank lists are students who passed Class XII before 2017.
