‘Action to be based on the report’

The State government on Wednesday told the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that an expert committee formed to assess the sulphuric acid leak at the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi has inspected the unit.

Taking note of the hazardous substances locked inside, the State government said it would act in accordance with the report of the panel, which comprised members from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, Fire and Rescue Services and retired professors from IIT- Madras and Anna University.

Direction sought

Vedanta, in its submission before the court, sought a direction to permit at least minimal personnel to assess the situation. The company said that it had no access to the plant following the closure and sealing of the unit and wanted to know the extent of leak.

A Division Bench of Justices C.T. Selvam and A.M. Basheer Ahamed, took cognisance of the submission made by the State government which said that the panel had already inspected the plant and the government would act accordingly.
