DETROIT — The Detroit Auto Dealers Association will announce on July 24 a new date for the North American International Auto Show starting in 2020, the organization confirmed Thursday.
The yearly car show has been rumored for months to be moving either to. The new date will take effect for the 2020 show. The 2019 show will remain in January.
Show organizers are hoping to stop a stream of automakers who have announced they're pulling out, as well as modernize the event as the industry evolves and embraces new forms of mobility.
DADA on Thursday released a that's part of a full 2-minute video it plans to show on the 24th. It features a rendering of a reimagined Cobo Center, including outdoor test tracks and vehicle displays.
Show spokesman Max Muncey has said a move to October could help lower cost and complexity for automakers. In that scenario, the show would take place about a month after the Paris show and roughly a month before the Los Angeles one.
A move to the summer or fall would give visitors a chance to see more of the city in the warmer months.
General Motors has supported a move to June that would possibly correspond with the Detroit Grand Prix. GM North America President Alan Batey this month said such a move would allow for a new automotive spectacle to attract people to the city.
"I just think it could be so much more if the timing was right," Batey told Automotive News. "We could showcase what a great city we've got and what's going on."
