MUMBAI: An
18-year-old boy drowned in a nallah at
Vikhroli East late on Wednesday. The
teenager, Kiran Pawar, was swimming in the nallah with 12 other friends when the incident took place. The death toll due to rain-related tragedies this month in the city has now gone up to 18.
To pre-empt loss of life and property, the civic body has procured water sensors which will be installed along the wall of drains and rivers in the city. These sensors will automatically sound an alert in the disaster control room about rising water levels during rainfall. Civic officials said that this will help the control room mobilize resources to tackle the situation.
In another development, senior civic officials said that the rising number of potholes on roads is due to work not being done in some places according to the requirement and assured that action against would be initiated against those concerned. TOI reported on Thursday, about potholes resurfacing after the recent heavy downpour.
In one instance in Bandra, the BMC is conducting an inquiry against the contractor for "poor" quality of work. Local corporator Asif Zakaria said that the contractor who was given road repair work worth Rs 30 crore in the Bandra-Santacruz belt and Andheri (east). "In Bandra, he did pre-monsoon work on four roads and all of them developed potholes recently rainfall," said Zakaria.
Additional civic commissioner Vijay Singhal said that the number of such complaints is lesser than before.
