LOS ANGELES, June 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Krista Hovsepian stars as Julia in the offbeat comedy, "Wholesome Foods, I Love You... Is That OK?" alongside longtime pal, Daniel De Santo. The renowned actors joined forces with award-winning documentarian, Cailleah Scott-Grimes to round out the production team. Hovsepian is also the series' showrunner, creator, and writer.
"WFILY" follows a neurotic yoga teacher who sets out in search of love at - you guessed it - her favorite organic supermarket.
Hovsepian (The Listener, The Date) stars as the endearing protagonist, with De Santo (Mean Girls, The Boondock Saints II) appearing as Marko, the show's "love interest."
"Julia's obsessed with all things health and wellness, but like many women in their 20s and 30s, she's struggling to find balance," Hovsepian said. "She's drawn to things like yoga and other wellness practices because she's constantly seeking that sense of equanimity."
Throughout the series, we meet a colorful cast of characters: Cartwright, played by Juno-nominee Chris George (Ransom, Reign), is the resident goofball who writes hip-hop lyrics in the supermarket parking lot - Hovsepian and George even perform an original rap in E5.
"Krista made it clear early on that she wanted to create honest situations within this often idealized health world," said De Santo. "The material's heightened and sometimes a little goofy, but she does a great job of using humor and vulnerability to make it really relatable."
"As humans, we put so much pressure on ourselves to be the best, to have it all together, but the truth is nobody really knows what they're doing. None of us have it all figured out," added Hovsepian.
The show also introduces us to Fred, the produce manager, played by Kyle Buchanan (Suits, Good Witch), and we get a tour of what Julia calls "The Seven Wonders of the Secret Spice World" with a clueless shopper named Annabelle.
Beyond the whimsical world Hovsepian has created within the market, we encounter Julia's roommates, Alex: Samara Stern (Blood Riders), and Veronica: Jenny Raven (Designated Survivor, Black Mirror).
Katerina Vitkoff, Sana Asad, Margaret Lamarre, Navi Dhanoa, and Aniela Kurylo round out the yoga crew.
Tennille Read (Schitt's Creek, Workin' Moms), Connie Wang (Odd Squad), IMG model Danika Brysha, and Richard Waugh (Designated Survivor, American Gothic) all have cameo appearances, while Angela Besharah (The Kennedys, Bitten) pops up as Marko's therapist, Dr. Burke. If there's one thing that's clear, it's that Hovsepian prioritized having a predominantly female cast.
"This series definitely appeals to young wellness enthusiasts who relate to Julia's lifestyle, but because she's such a messy human - and because there are so many other fascinating characters fleshing out the cast - even people who don't quite 'get' her obsession are likely to find it all pretty hilarious," said Scott-Grimes.
Hovsepian and De Santo are incredibly easy to watch. The duo have phenomenal chemistry, effortlessly playing off of each other and bantering with razor-sharp timing.
While not entirely biopic, Hovsepian is close to the series' thematic material, which inspired her creative process.
"My mom is German and grew up with a very holistic approach to life," she said. "Everyone joked that her Dad was the 'good health apostle', so I got to know this world pretty early on."
The show has garnered the attention of Paleo Magazine and Yoga Digest, and is currently streaming on YouTube, Stareable, and SEEKA TV with 200, 000+ views. For more information about Wholesome Foods, I Love You… Is That OK? check out www.wfily.com
