One-year jail term for Central Excise official

A CBI special court here on Wednesday sentenced a Central Excise official to one-year rigorous imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case.

Pronouncing the order, the court found P.A. Thomas, a Superintendent with the Central Excise in Kochi, guilty under Sections 13(2) and 13(1) (e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988. Besides the jail term, the official has also been imposed a fine of ₹32 lakh.

As per the case, Thomas, while working as an inspector with the Central Excise, amassed disproportionate wealth worth ₹19.48 lakh in his name and in the name of his wife Preethi Thomas between January 1996 and March 2000.

The trial against Preethi Thomas, who had been arraigned as second accused in the case, was dropped following her death.
