'No laughing matter': Quokka filmed drinking pina colada on Rottnest
A video has emerged of a quokka drinking out of a goon bag on Rottnest Island.
The video emerged on an Instagram story, and it uses a location tag in order to appear in the public Rottnest Island feed.
The video shows a man in a snapback holding a two-litre Vok Pina Colada case, and directing the nozzle into the quokka's mouth.
The quokka latches on, and the man can be seen holding the goon bag's button down in order for the animal to drink.
A caption on the video reads "watching out for our homies".
RSPCA WA chief inspector Amanda Swift said the organisation was tired of seeing animal cruelty posted on social media "as a joke".
"RSPCA WA is concerned that despite plenty of signs and warnings to visitors to not feed quokkas, yet again we see irresponsible people interfering with wildlife," she said.
"Feeding them anything other than their natural diet can be extremely harmful, and alcohol can potentially kill an animal as small as this.
"What concerns us is that people do this and post it on social media thinking it’s funny, when it is actually intentional cruelty that can have severe or fatal effects on the animal.
"This is not a laughing matter. We need to put a stop to this. Anyone who has any information about this person should call the RSPCA Cruelty Hotline immediately."
It's understood Rottnest Island rangers assisted WA Police with an investigation into the video, and two people are currently assisting police with inquiries.
Those involved could face a fine up to $50,000 and face a maximum five years imprisonment under the Animal Welfare Act regarding animal cruelty.
They also could be charged under the Biodiversity Conservation Act Section, which stipulates aperson must not feed fauna unless the person has lawful authority to feed it.
This could cost the person involved a penalty of $20,000.
