On average, the higher tariffs would mean a model imported from Europe would cost $5,800 more, according to Auto Alliance – a lobbying group for vehicle manufacturers.

The separate analysis from the American Action Forum, a policy research group that identifies itself as politically center-right, estimates that the average cost of an imported car would increase $4,205.

While President Trump is proposing a 20-to-25-percent tariff on European vehicles, the policy isn’t yet on the books. Automakers are lobbying heavily through the Auto Alliance to prevent the increase, and the European Union is threatening to fight the greater tariffs by increasing duties on American goods coming into its member countries, according to a Reuters report.

Dave Sullivan, Manager of Product Analysis, at Auto Pacific told Motor1.com that there was also the possibility of automakers finding a way around the tariffs.

"What we could see is more modules being shipped to the U.S. instead of parts," he said. "So, as it goes through customers it might not be an aluminum wheel but maybe it has a tire on it and becomes a tire module! Then they could try to avoid the tariff."

The pushback from American vehicle producers and the possibility of retaliation from Europe creates a strong incentive for the President to consider backing down.

The President has backed down from controversial ideas in the past like his proposal for a 25-cent gasoline tax to fund infrastructure. Republican politicians and even Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao weren't on board with the plan, and the President has seemingly dropped the idea because there was been little mention of it since then.

"President Trump always asks for or wants everything but that is how he deals. The Art of the Deal book points this out," Sullivan told Motor1.com. "He always asks for 100% but the reality is, he will settle for something fair. He's a hard bargainer. I don't expect to see doomsday-like things happen. Trump just won't step on the auto industry like that, I hope." 

Considering a German-made car? Bad news might be on the way. While President Trump isn’t a big fan of European auto imports in general, and vehicles coming from Germany especially raise his hackles. The President has made two suggestions, both of which could wreak havoc on German automakers like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen.

The lesser evil would be a 35-percent tariff on German-made models, which would take the price of a base 3 Series from $34,900 to $47,110.

The President has also suggested a total ban on importing a vehicle from Deutschland into the U.S. – a radical, although highly unlikely, choice.

After reading the last three slides, perhaps you’re not concerned because you have no plans to buy an EU-made vehicle anytime soon. However, President Trump’s proposed tariffs would also affect European auto parts, in addition to whole models.

This means that even if the model's assembly is in Detroit, if the vehicle contains parts from Europe, importing those components would be subject to the larger tariffs.

An increase in the price of parts is far harder to calculate because different models use various amounts of imported components. For example, a statement from Toyota says that the cost of the American-made Camry would grow by $1,800. If the company passes that entire amount to consumers, then the popular sedan’s base price would grow to $25,445 from $23,645 currently.

The research from the American Action Forum estimates the price of American-made vehicles would increase at least $1,262.

The aforementioned tariffs on vehicles and auto parts are just a proposal for now. However, even if he doesn’t increase the duties, American-made vehicles from domestic and foreign automakers alike (like at Volvo's new plant in South Carolina, above) would still be more expensive because of the recently increased duties on aluminum and steel from Europe, Mexico, and Canada.

So far, automakers haven’t increased vehicle prices to cope with the increased cost of materials. However, research from indicates that the higher tariffs would add about $300 to a model’s price, like ones from BMW's Spartanburg, SC, factory (above).

Much like the variable effects that tariffs on auto parts might have, changing prices for steel an aluminum would affect automakers differently.

"A lot of it will depend on where they source their steel. Hyundai and Kia could be hit hard because they have Hyundai Steel. Aluminum, including wheels, could prove to be something no one can avoid," Sullivan told Motor1.com.
