Walgreens said same-store sales at its U.S. pharmacies were unchanged in the quarter. The average expectation was for a 3.7 percent rise, according to eight analysts polled by I/B/E/S.

Excluding items, the company earned $1.53 per share, beating analysts' expectations of $1.48.

The company's total sales rose 14 percent to $34.33 billion, edging past the average estimate of $34.05 billion.

Walgreens also authorized a $10 billion share buyback and increased its quarterly dividend by 10 percent to 44 cents per share.
