The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has complimented Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi for her initiative in collecting the pending power tariff bills.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, party leader in the Legislative Assembly A. Anbalagan said the government had failed to collect taxes in a proper manner. The AIADMK had warned the government of pending arrears in Electricity Department, Local Administration and Commercial Taxes Department for a long time. The tax arrears amounted to around ₹850 crore, he said.
Complimenting the Lt. Governor for taking steps to collect pending arrears in the Electricity Department, Mr. Anbalagan said the decision to name defaulters in the media was the best step forward to collect the arrears. Many defaulters had started remitting dues after the department decided to name the people, he added.
He wanted the government to adopt a transparent policy in the auction of arrack shops. The Excise Department should act according to the provisions of Excise Rules in auctioning arrack shops for this year. The auction of 27 shops under single bid should be final. There should not be any reconsideration on the auctioned shops, he said.
