CHENNAI:  Tamil film actor Jai has yet again been caught for violating traffic rules. This time for modifying the silencers in his car that created massive noise. Jai’s car was stopped by cops at Nungambakkam on Tuesday night. Unlike previous instances, when he was caught drunk driving and made to appear in court, this time the cops made Jai record a video talking about the hazards of using such modified silencers in vehicles.

“Such loud noises will create problems for birds, patients in the hospital and others. Hence, avoid using such silencers,” Jai was seen telling in the video, in which he was accompanied by a traffic police officer. He also urged people to not modify silencers. “Police will seize your vehicle,” he said.

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, any alteration to the vehicle is illegal and those creating heavy noise is a public disturbance. “Normally, when such offenders are caught, a challan is issued and `100 as fine is charged under the Act. The noise of any vehicle silencer shouldn’t exceed a certain decibel depending on the vehicle,” a senior police officer said.

“Four special teams have been formed who will be cracking on racing, speeding vehicles, and to check on such silencers round the clock. They are also tracking places and people who are specialised in such alterations,” said R Sudhakar joint commissioner of police, Traffic (South).

After he was caught last September for drunk driving, actor Jai’s license was suspended for six months by a court order passed in October.
This time Jai was fined `1,100. “`1,000 is the fine amount for noise pollution and maximum is 85 decibels based on the vehicle weight,” said a police officer.
