In an effort to draw the attention of the authorities to the staff crunch and infrastructure deficiencies plaguing several State-run schools across the district, scores of schoolchildren under the aegis of the Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) took out a rally here on Thursday, demanding concrete steps to rejuvenate the government schools.
Students from various government schools marched through the main streets of the town to draw attention to the sorry state of affairs in several State-run schools.
The rally culminated in a demonstration at the office of the District Educational Officer here.
Addressing the demonstration, the PDSU district president M. Suresh said students were subjected to severe hardships due to lack of adequate toilets at the State-run schools in Nayabazar, Rajendra Nagar and Gandhinagar in the town.
The old government high school building at Indiranagar has become a cause for concern from safety perspective, he noted, alleging that the vacancies of teaching and non-teaching staff in many government schools across the district remained unfilled.
Shortage of textbooks continue to haunt several schools even more than three weeks after the commencement of the new academic year, he pointed out.
PDSU district general secretary N. Azad and others took part in the demonstration.
Later, a delegation of the PDSU activists handed over a memorandum containing their demands to the officials at the DEO’s office.
