Ranchi: Tension gripped parts of the state capital on Wednesday morning when people from two different communities attacked each other with stones and bricks after chunks of animal flesh were found dumped at the gate of a school.
Locals said a motorcyclist was thrashed by some people immediately after the flesh, which many claim was beef, was spotted at the entrance of Ursuline Convent Montessori School on Purulia Road. Later, groups of people from the two communities gathered and started a heated exchange of words which led to stone throwing at Mission Chowk. Many people, including a few policemen, were injured.

Security personnel from three police stations were deployed to restore order in the area. They lathi-charged and used teargas shells to disperse the troublemakers. SDO (Ranchi) Anjali Yadav and SP (city) Aman Kumar were also at the spot to diffuse the tension. Shops and educational institutes remained shut for some time.

Kumar said, “The trouble began after prohibited meat was found outside a school. DSP (Ranchi) Rajkumar Mehta was injured and taken to hospital.” Yadav added, “An FIR was lodged with Lower Bazar police station against unidentified miscreants. We are scanning CCTV and mobile footages to identify them.”

This is the third sectarian clash that has taken place in the state capital in recent weeks. On June 10, violence broke out in the Main Road area when a motorcyclist knocked down a woman shopper before Eid. A day later, trouble erupted after prohibited meat was found dumped outside a temple in Nagri, on the outskirts of Ranchi.
