Living Room and Library at a Glance
Location: Del Mar, California
Size: 280 square feet (26 square meters)
Designer: Danielle Perkins of Danielle Interior Design & Decor
These San Diego County, California, homeowners wanted a flexible layout for the furniture in their living room, where they spend a lot of time. And they wanted to improve the look of an adjacent library, which they can see from their sofa. Designer Danielle Perkins helped them with a new paint color and new flooring, lighting fixtures and furniture designed for flexibility.

Before. The old living room featured a decade-old carpet and a sofa that Perkins describes as “very loved.”
While the couple liked having a curved one-piece sofa, Perkins saw an opportunity to bring in a seating arrangement with greater flexibility.

After. This photo shows the new two-piece custom sectional. The two-seat section in the foreground can be moved wherever the owners want to use it.

This photo shows the two-seat section moved to the other side of the sectional, with its back to the French doors. It can also serve as a freestanding settee.

Custom ottoman and snack table. A clever ottoman-table combination brings even more flexibility to the arrangement. When the couple feel like having a snack or glass of wine, they can slide the glass-topped table within easy reach. When it’s not in use, they can slide the table back out of the way.
Here’s the glass table in the ready-for-snacking position. The tabletop has dual layers, with a display space in the gap between the glass for things like Christmas cards.

Before. The 25-square-foot area beneath the stairs contained freestanding furniture and a cat litter box before the makeover.
After. The new library space has a more cohesive feel, thanks to the built-in bookshelf and bench. As for the litter box? From the living room, the bench appears to have a solid base.
But from this angle, you can see that the bench is open in the front. The homeowners store the litter box beneath it, and the end of the bench neatly hides the box.
The piece of art above the bench features a cat (not theirs). The homeowners display artwork and collected items from their travels on the shelves of the built-in bookshelf.

Here’s another view of the bookshelf. There are also built-in cupboards beneath it and a window.
