The Meteorological Observatory Unit in Panambur will shortly move to a new premises in Shaktinagar, said Meteorology Officer of Mangaluru International Airport Ronald Vaz.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a workshop on “Fisheries Warning” here on Wednesday, Mr. Vaz said that the process of shifting to the new location was on.

The new unit will be fully operational in two months, he said.

While the observatory unit of the Meteorological Department in the airport is serving the needs of aircraft operations, the observatory unit at Panambur is being used to get readings necessary to make predictions about rain, cyclone and tsunami.

Mr. Vaz said that the department has proposed to install a Doppler Weather Radar system at Shaktinagar that will help in accurate prediction of rainfall, wind pattern, thunderstorms and cyclone.

The radar will cover a radius of 250 nautical miles.

Mr. Vaz said that Mangaluru will be the first city in the State to have a Doppler Weather Radar system.
