MG Reportedly Working On An Electric AWD Mazda MX-5 Miata Rival

MG is best known for creating iconic roadsters but the company’s current lineup focuses on crossovers such as the ZS.

Thankfully MG hasn’t forgotten its roots as SAIC design boss Shao Jingfeng has confirmed the company will once again produce sports cars. Speaking with Drive, Jingfeng said the automaker has plans for a Mazda MX-5 Miata rival and described it as an “MG B and MG A type car.”

While Jingfeng didn’t go into too many specifics, he reportedly confirmed the model would be an electric roadster with all-wheel drive. He also said the car will ride on an all-new platform which has presumably been designed to accommodate the electric powertrain.

There’s no word on when the roadster will arrive but it could be followed by several other models. As Jingfeng told the publication, MG also has plans for a “motorsports car, a sports car and, two years later, [an] EV, all EV.” That statement is a bit unclear but Jingfeng went on to say he wants to embrace MG’s history because “the brand stopped for several years.” A spokesperson later told the publication “Sports cars are the essence of MG in the past and we’re trying to carry over this essence into our future plans.”

It’s been awhile since MG produced sports cars and roadsters as the TF went out of production in late 2010 or 2011. However, the company has shown an interest in building sporty cars recently as they unveiled the E-motion concept at the Shanghai Auto Show in 2017.
