Coimbatore: The higher education department has told Bharathiar University that the retirement age for principals in self-financing colleges is 62 and asked the university to follow the government order regarding it. The university would send a circular to all concerned colleges informing this,
said registrar in-charge B Vanitha.
In a communication to the university dated June 27, principal secretary to the department of higher education Sunil Paliwal asked the registrar to scrupulously follow the instructions of the government which says the retirement age of principals of self-financing colleges should be 62.
A syndicate meeting of the university held in September 2017 had raised the retirement age of principals of self-financing colleges to 65. Following this, Paliwal wrote to the university asking the management to follow the GO dated 18-8-2003 which says the retirement age of principals in self-financing colleges must be 62.
However, the university had written to the higher education department seeking relaxation of the age limit as some colleges had requested it, Vanitha said. “We wrote seeking clarification on whether to follow the age limit according to the syndicate decision or what is given in the GO,” she said.
In his communication on Wednesday, Paliwal said the government reiterates its earlier instructions to retain the retirement age as 62. Vanitha said the university would issue a note order and send circulars to all colleges informing that the retirement age of principals should be 62.
Reacting to this, representatives of self-financing colleges said they would follow the state’s instructions.
The issue is expected to create waves at the university’s senate meeting to be held on Friday.
