CHENNAI: The city corporation sanctioned projects worth 386 crore at the smart city limited board meeting on Tuesday.
The board has sanctioned 125 crore for construction of storm water drains under the area-based development in T Nagar. "In 2015, 2016 and 2017, IAS officials conducted inspections and a study was carried out by Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services limited (TNUIFSL) in various parts of the city for the storm water drains. At that time, some missing links were located at various locations. In that there are a few of them in T Nagar which is the smart city area. To ensure that the area is not inundated during monsoons, we have planned to complete the construction of the missing links ," said an official.

The civic body has also planned to take up 15 temple tanks across the city and plans to restore it and 2.28 crore has been sanctioned for it. Other projects include the setting up of vertical gardens on the pillars of the GN city flyover, modernisation of the Kanammapettai crematorium. " We will follow the Bengaluru model and will rope in experts to set up lawns on these pillars. These will not only provide lung space but also increase the aesthetic value to the area," said an official. The corporation plans to take up 22 more ponds for restoration under the smart city project. " We want to de-silt and restore the ponds before monsoon," said an official.

Another 228 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of two flyovers as reported earlier by TOI. For the two bridges one on Eldams Road-Thiyagaraya Road junction and the other between Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar Salai and Venkatanarayana Road feasibility study has already been carried out, said a senior official. "We have received a sanction in principle. We are yet to get administrative sanction," said an official. These projects will roll out after detailed project reports are out, added the official.
