The city police have sent a proposal to the State Highways (National Highways Division) on redesigning the existing roundabout at Sungam junction to improve the traffic flow. The plan is to have two roundabout at Sungam junction similar to the one at Red Cross junction, close to the main entrance of the combined court complex.
The idea of splitting the traffic island of the existing single roundabout at Sungam junction into two small roundabout was proposed by the Citizens Voice Club of Coimbatore.
The proposal was sent to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sujith Kumar, who took the issue to Police Commissioner K. Periaiah.
“The proposal has been forwarded to the Highways Department after approval from the Commissioner. They have shown interest on the proposal which requires minimal work of splitting the existing roundabout into two. The redesigned traffic plan is expected to ease traffic flow at the junction until other projects like a flyover come up at the place in future,” said Mr. Kumar.
While the current roundabout at Sungam junction is operated with traffic signals, the redesigned plan will not require signals. This will function similar to the traffic arrangement currently in place at Red Cross junction, said Mr. Kumar.
The official added that though Highways Department has evinced interest in the proposal, the police are yet to receive any official communication.
Though signals are operational and police personnel deployed, Sungam junction is one of the places in the city where traffic signal violations are reported rampant.
